Welcome!

I am excited that your student is interested in the Summer Jazz Combo program! Learning to play in a group is a very rewarding experience that can be enjoyed throughout their life.

Before we get started, let’s make sure all expectations are communicated.

Summer Jazz Combo Information

The 2024 Summer Jazz Combo program starts Wednesday, June 19, 2024, and ends Wednesday, August 14, 2024. There will be eight, one-hour sessions for each group that includes a final performance at the Emerald of Siam on the last day, August 14th (no classes will be held on the 3rd/4th of July or the 7th/8th of August).

PROGRAM TUITION:

Early bird pricing (before June 1st, 2024): $249 - one-time payment OR three payments of $83.

After June 5th, 2024: $299 - one-time payment OR three payments of $100

PAYMENT:  All payments should be made through my website, pianowithsteph.org. You will register and sign up for payments on the Summer Jazz Combo page.

MUSIC THEORY PRE-REQUISITE: In preparation for the Summer Jazz Combo program, students are required to complete the Online Music Theory Course. This ensures a common foundation for everyone to build on when learning jazz harmony and improvisation. If you have taken private lessons with me during the school year, or participated in the group jazz piano classes, this requirement is waived (we would have already covered the material in the course).

PROGRAM SCHEDULE: There are four available time slots for jazz combos. More will be added if more people are interested in the program. Each group will meet weekly for one hour.

- Wednesday @ 4:00 PM

- Wednesday @ 5:15 PM

- Thursdays @ 6:30 PM

- Thursdays @ 7:30 PM

WHO CAN REGISTER? The Summer Jazz Combo program is open to both instrumentalists and vocalists in either middle school or high school. Combos will be organized according to school level — any given combo will either be all high-school or all middle-school students.

REGISTRATION: Students can register through the Summer Jazz Combo page. When you register, you can select one of the above time slots. During registration, I will ask you how many of the time slots your student is available to attend. We may need to switch around who is in which group, depending on how many instruments we have available for each group.

NO MAKEUP LESSONS:  Tuition cost is based on enrollment, not attendance. Lessons that you miss will not be made up. Your tuition reserves a specific lesson time each week for your student.  If you cannot attend a lesson, there will be no refund. You will receive all the lessons you pay for only if you show up for your scheduled time each week. It’s the same if you signed up your child for dance lessons at a studio – you would pay a monthly fee and wouldn’t get a refund if your child missed a rehearsal. If you have an illness or a one-time conflict with your regular lesson time, please contact me to let me know you will not be attending.

WEEKLY REHEARSALSAt each practice session, we will practice improvisation techniques, listening exercises, and learn how to play as a cohesive group. We will be preparing songs to be performed at the end of the summer.

GUEST MUSICIANS: Throughout the summer, I will be bringing in guest musicians to work with students so they can get specialized help on their instruments.

END OF SUMMER PERFORMANCE: At the of the summer, students will present their hard work at a performance with their combo. The exact date is yet to be determined - but it will be during the last week of the Summer Jazz Combo program.

BE PROMPT FOR PRACTICE SESSIONS: You will receive only the time remaining if you are late.

PRACTICING: Daily practice is required. It is important to come prepared for rehearsal so we can learn new things each week. It is respectful to your bandmates to practice anything we go over at a rehearsal so we are using rehearsal time to get better at playing as a whole group.

LESSON MATERIALS: I will be providing music materials for each group. If students have a specific song in mind that they would like to perform, they are welcome to bring it in. â€‹

PARENTS’ RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Encourage students as they try something new!

  • Remind students to practice

  • Call, text, or email me with questions or to discuss your child’s progress

CANCELLATION POLICY:

You can receive a full refund if you cancel your plan before June 1st, 2024.

If you cancel between June 1st, 2024, and June 15, 2024, you will receive a 50% refund.

After June 15, 2024, there will be no refund given.

Contact me through stephanie@pianowithsteph.org if you need to cancel your plan before June 15, 2024.
